This book is an initiation to language with an explicit
mission. Its ultimate goal is not only to introduce the reader tomodern
iinguistics but also enable the average Moroccan reader to develop a genuine
language consciousness. Misconceptions about language among common people, students
and even some intellectuais have been cuitivated in the modern Moroccan society
partly by cultural stereotypes and preiudices, and partly by politically
oriented language ideoiogies. The intellectual objective of this book is to challenge
these stereotypes, pre]udices and ideoiogies not by criticlzing them directly
but by drawing the reader as close to the nature of language as the
introductory character of this book allows.
